Cards for Care is a tool that fosters the care provider/resident relationship and increases the capacity of the care provider to administer resident-centered care. It is a deck of oversized cards that the care provider uses with the resident while they administer non-critical care. On one side is a visual narrative using scenario-building design, on the obverse, is reminiscence theory prompts to assist the care provider to initiate a conversation. The topics elicit memories that stimulate affirmative aspects of self and positive emotions.
Design explores a more empathetic system and looks beyond an artifact and the physical environment to address the complexity of the situation. Patient-centred care focuses on the emotional significance in creating autonomy. It requires a dedicated personal dialogue between the care provider and patient. I feel the main emphasis behind design is the creation of a sensitive reassurance that results from disarming interactions. Designers are trained to be user advocates. I can think of no better place for that strength, then in health care.
